-Well that's what we have to find out, said Prince James, before an apocalypse starts in the city's streets.
-I have to report to my superiors at Vienna, said Lady Anna. This thing may be contagious, they have to know.
-And I have to report it to Venice as well, said Marcela.
-Ladies we do not want to be making reckless moves and we do not want your clans sending teams here to experiment with my city's people.
-That thing that attacked me was dead! Dead and frozen for many hours, yet my necromantic powers had no effect on it. My people at Venice need to know about this.
-If even that necromancer, said Anna, a hint of irony in her voice, can't control that thing, my clan has to know about it. The tradition of hiding our presence is in grave danger.
-Okay, I guess you are right but first we need to see what we can do without outside help.
All i ask of you is to delay your report for the coming dawn. Is that so much to ask?
-I guess i can wait, my Prince, said Marcela.
-Well, either way they were gonna read my report at dawn so, yes, I can delay it till then, said Anna.
-Fine, let's not lose any more time. Marcela I want you to keep an eye on every city's morgue. Be there for each body that may appear and contact 'Faceless' if you need any help.
Anna, I asked Marcela to bring a sample of that 'Thing'. Do your thing and find out why the dead are rising.
-That, I will do, said Anna.
-It will be hard to spy on all of the city's morgues alone.
-I will contact sir Nick. You will be in contact with him the entire time. You two can handle it, I suppose.
-At your service, my prince.
Paul admired his prince even more when dangerous situations arose.
Prince James was in control. He was always in control and if he wasn't in control then he assumed it immediately.
That stems from ruling a city for centuries Paul believed and judging by his past two years Thessaloniki was a Hell of a city.
-Paul?
-Yes, my Prince.
-I want you out in the streets. If someone is messing with necromantic powers i want you to find him. Also find out about that woman. If she had come in touch with anyone or anything before she died.
Assemble your team, the usual troublemakers, and bring me answers.
-And if I find who is responsible?
-I would prefer to question him alive but if you need to, you are a Sheriff. You have my permission to do whatever is necessary.
-Lady Anna, may I borrow your Darius? And Asterios too? They would be of great help.
-Alright Sheriff but keep them out of troubles and for one time in two years bring them back whole and uninjured.
Paul smiled. He and his company always had a way to mess with things out of their reach and one way or the other they had always managed to emerge victorious up till now.
-It's settled then! said James. Let's move people. We have almost ten hours to find what is happening.
Paul bowed and left. Prince James was a man of action, not words and he had nothing more to add.
On his way down he had already dialed Jason's number.
-Yes, Sheriff? What happened now? Another premonition?
-Actually yes. We are in deep shit! Get Darius and Asterios and meet me at the usual place in half an hour.
-What...!?
Paul had already hang up the phone.
He was now dialing another number.
A male voice answered it.
-Yes? Paul?
-Damn you! How did you know? said Paul
-I always know..
-Then you know why i called you.
-Yeah, you called me to invite me to our usual place in 25 minutes!!!
-What the hell Pablo? How is it even possible?
-The voices my friend, they always keep me informed.
-Damn you and your voices! When you do such things you creep me out.
-Chill, Sheriff. We will talk in 25 minutes.
Paul stopped for a couple of seconds. That freak Pablo always caught him by surprise.
''How can he know? How the fuck can he always know?''
For a moment he thought of her. She was going to be really mad.
''Not now, that shit in the TV comes first, my love'' he thought.
He wrote a short but clear message on his mobile phone and sent it to two more members of his team.
''Meeting in 25 minutes at the usual place. Be there and be ready. The night will be long''
His team was weird. Vampires from different clans, with different powers and different views on matters. Still they had managed to survive many hard situations and to avoid arguing among themselves.
And that was hard for immortal beings.
For two years now he and his team had dealt with many threats inside the city and now there was one more challenge coming their way.
He had twenty minutes to find them and that was plenty of time but he had something to do before that.
He let his mind empty of any thoughts and silently called her name.
''Tarathiel!''
Of course that wasn't her name. That was the name she had given herself to be known in the mortal world. It wouldn't be possible to even think of her name, or at least that's what she had told him.
Out of a sudden, a small figure appeared at the corner.
-You have called me, vampire?
-Yes, Tarathiel, I need your assistance. Paul had to push himself to be serious when he talked with that creature. It was really hard to be serious when he had a 14 year old girl in front of him but he knew that appearances rarely mattered. This 14 year old girl might as well be the oldest creature he had ever seen.
-Strange times I am allowed to witness, said the girl. A vampire needs my assistance.
-They will become even more strange Tarathiel...The dead can't rest!
-I know, poor souls not allowed to leave their dead bodies.
-You know who did that?
-Once more your kind proves it's only made to destroy.
-One of us? Who?
-Not one, many! A prophecy long forgotten, vampire.
-Aren't you going to intervene?
-I am not allowed to. This has to do with your kind.
-But the last time you...
-I didn't make the rules vampire and even my kind has to follow rules.
-Can this be stopped?
-What has a start has also an end!
-I hate it when you speak like that! Paul shouted but Tarathiel was gone.
''How did I become involved with all that shit?'' he wondered again for the millionth time.
He looked at his watch. Ten minutes left for their meeting.
"Now i have to hurry!" he thought to himself and started to run.
